Optimum 5.5™ Moso bamboo, specified by Teragren for use in its
bamboo building products, is plantation grown in managed
agricultural plots by independent farmers in China. Teragren
supports these farmers and their families by paying fair market
value for raw materials and by encouraging proper stewardship of
this valuable resource. The culture of China also supports
independent farmers and sustainable harvesting methods. Teragren
bamboo is harvested at maturity at 5-1/2 to 6 years, leaving behind
a thriving plant and new shoots. Harvesting sooner results in softer
fiber and a less stable finished product. Unlike hardwood trees
requiring more than 60 years to mature, bamboo is a grass that is
renewably harvested over and over from the same plant. In addition,
it is not a food source for Panda habitat because Panda do not
reside in the province where the bamboo is harvested.
